Cheap Ways to Keep Your Home Cool

home air conditionerJuly is here and keeping your home cool in Southeast Texas is becoming an increasingly expensive effort. However, there are methods to keep energy costs down while still maintaining a comfortably cool temperature in your home. In order to help out our fellow Southeast Texans, Ritter has prepared a list of money-saving home cooling tips!

Block Windows

Install energy-saving blinds on all windows, particularly east and west windows, to prevent heat from entering your home. Curtains and drapes are great heat-blockers as well, especially when they are in colors that reflect light.

Avoid Appliances that Generate Heat

Avoid running appliances that generate heat, such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers, until the evening hours when the outside temperature drops.

Utilize Ceiling Fans

Use ceiling fans to compensate for higher thermostat settings. Configure your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise to maximize circulation of cool air.

Seal Doors and Windows

Make sure doors and windows are sealed shut so that cool air doesn’t escape through cracks. This is especially important while running your A/C.

Seal Air Ducts and Insulate

Make sure that your home’s air ducts are sealed to prevent air from escaping. Also, make sure that your home is well insulated, especially your attic.
